CADRE Joins the Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition to End Willful Defiance Suspensions in LAUSD

On May 14, 2013, CADRE parents and staff celebrated another milestone in our long-term goal of ending school pushout.  Working as strategic partners to the Brothers, Sons, Selves Coalition, and building on the years of tireless organizing and advocacy by all of our allies in the Dignity in Schools Campaign LA Chapter – Community Rights Campaign, Youth Justice Coalition, Public Counsel Law Center, Children’s Defense Fund California, and ACLU of Southern California – the LAUSD Board of Education adopted the 2013 School Discipline and School Climate Bill of Rights, which ends suspensions for “willful defiance” in LAUSD, ramps up implementation of School-Wide Positive Behavior Support (SWPBS), makes discipline data more available and useful, clarifies the role of school police, and introduces the implementation of restorative justice to all schools.

CADRE applauds the many unsung heroes in ushering this milestone, many who speak truth to power every day in order for the truth to rise to the level of new policy — current students, pushed out students, parents, caregivers, advocates, and of course, organizers.  Los Angeles drew national attention for this decision, and we have our work cut out for us to make this groundbreaking policy a reality in the far reaches of LAUSD.

Sometimes it only takes two hours

To see South LA Parents recognize their power to change our schools. And when we do, we have the courage to go against the grain.

It’s the little things that make a big difference in building real parent participation:

– $50 supports 10 new parents meeting in one of their homes to identify issues

In June the Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable (LAUPR) presented CADRE with its Impact Micro Award in acknowledgement of our work towards building community sustainability. We are pleased to accept this award and grateful for the recognition. We are especially inspired to know that knowledge of our work has expanded and reached new partners and allies. CADRE and allies get California Legislature to begin ending school pushout

Many years of work culminated in EIGHT (8) new school discipline and juvenile justice reform bills being introduced and making their way through committees!  Please visit www.fixschooldiscipline.org for all the details and call (323) 752-9997 or email (info@cadre-la.org) us at CADRE if you want to get involved in our statewide policy advocacy.  Congrats to all of us in this fight to fulfill the human rights to dignity, quality education, and participation…we are finally starting to shift perception and belief that zero tolerance works – it doesn’t, and we are finally creating the conditions to change how we respond to and support children, youth, and parents who are criminalized because of their skin color and where they live.  We’ve got a long way to go – but we can definitely celebrate what we’ve been able to do in LA Unified, the City of LA, and now California-wide.

Successful 10th Anniversary Event – THANK YOU ALL!

It’s taken us a minute to assess the adventure that was CADRE’s 10th Anniversary Celebration on April 19th, but we can now safely say that it was a success in all the ways that mattered!  We are extremely grateful for all of the support from our parent leaders, Board, staff, sponsors, colleagues, allies, funders, and new friends!  We met all of our goals, and most importantly, we got a chance to introduce all of you to the South LA parents who have made CADRE possible.  They are pretty incredible, and we hope it’s clear now why we do the work that we do, and with such confidence that it’s the right thing.  Stay posted – we’ll be putting up pictures very soon….!!
